Walmart is undertaking a massive renovation project to remodel more than 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico in 2025, implementing its "Store of the Future" concept with improved layouts, expanded product selections, enhanced online pickup and delivery capabilities, and redesigned pharmacy areas with wider aisles and privacy features.
Walmart's pharmacy remodeling efforts focus specifically on enhancing patient privacy and improving the overall healthcare experience. The redesigned pharmacy areas will feature wider aisles for better accessibility, dedicated private screening rooms for consultations, and privacy checkout areas where customers can discuss sensitive health information without being overheard12. These improvements align with Walmart's commitment to protecting customers' protected health information (PHI) as outlined in their Notice of Privacy Practices3.
The pharmacy enhancements are part of Walmart's broader strategy to position its stores as healthcare destinations. By creating more private and comfortable pharmacy spaces, Walmart is acknowledging that pharmacists often serve as frontline healthcare providers, with customers typically interacting with their pharmacist ten times more frequently than with their primary care provider4. These privacy improvements come at a particularly important time, following past incidents where vendor errors resulted in the accidental disclosure of pharmacy customers' protected health information5.
Walmart's "Store of the Future" concept represents the retailer's vision for modernized shopping experiences, featuring big, bold signage, redesigned merchandise displays, and interactive technology that blends online and in-person shopping.12 Introduced in November 2023 with the re-grand opening of 117 stores across 30 states, this strategy aims to inspire customers while providing a seamless, high-quality shopping experience.2
The concept emphasizes sustainability with energy-efficient equipment and lighting, lower-impact refrigerants, and plans for a coast-to-coast network of affordable electric vehicle charging stations.34 Additional features include expanded departments with new product selections, dollar shops with seasonal products, modernized restrooms, and enhanced checkout options including both staffed and self-checkout lanes.56 This initiative is part of Walmart's broader $9 billion investment to modernize more than 1,400 stores nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to improving both customer experience and environmental impact.57
Texas is leading Walmart's nationwide remodeling initiative with 67 stores slated for renovation, representing approximately 10% of the total project.123 This significant investment builds upon the $2.6 billion Walmart has already spent upgrading Texas stores over the past five years.43
Beyond renovations, Walmart is expanding its Texas footprint with new Supercenters opening in 2025 in Cypress (April 30), Frisco and Melissa (fall), followed by Celina in spring 2026.13 Major metropolitan areas will see multiple store updates, including 13 in Houston, 7 in San Antonio, and 2 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.143 Each remodel represents a substantial investment, with reports indicating costs of approximately $750,000 per location.5
