James Marsden Faces Backlash for Supporting Convicted Child Abuser Brian Peck

people.com
people.com
James Marsden faced significant backlash after it was revealed that he wrote a letter of support for Brian Peck, a former Nickelodeon dialogue coach convicted of child sexual abuse in 2004. The letter surfaced in the 2024 docuseries "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV," which exposed that Marsden was among 41 people, including other actors like Taran Killam and Will Friedle, who advocated for leniency in Peck's sentencing. In his letter to the judge, Marsden claimed Peck had "suffered greatly" and assured that "the earth would fall from the sky before Brian would even think about doing something like this again." Marsden's support for Peck was particularly controversial as the victim was later revealed to be Drake Bell, who had starred in Nickelodeon shows like The Amanda Show as a child actor. Marsden did not initially comment on the resurfaced letter. However, the revelation sparked widespread criticism of the actors who vouched for Peck despite the severity of his crimes against a minor. It raised questions about the enabling culture in Hollywood and lack of accountability for sexual abusers.
