Microsoft has unveiled a new category of AI-powered PCs branded as "Copilot+PC," marking a significant step in the integration of artificial intelligence into personal computing. These devices leverage both on-device AI capabilities and cloud-based large language models to enhance performance and user experience.
Microsoft estimates that over 50 million AI PCs will be sold in the next 12 months, reflecting strong market demand for devices powered by generative AI technologies like ChatGPT, which Microsoft brands as Copilot.1
The introduction of these AI PCs is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to integrate AI across its product lineup, including Office apps, Teams, Outlook, and the Windows operating system.23
Pre-orders for Copilot+PC laptops began on May 20, 2024, with prices starting at $999. The devices will be available from June 18, 2024.24
The Qualcomm X Elite SoC powers the Copilot+PCs, featuring a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of approximately 40-45 TOPS (trillion operations per second).12
This performance significantly surpasses Intel's Meteor Lake NPU and AMD's Ryzen AI, which offers around 16 TOPS.1
The powerful NPU enables advanced AI capabilities, such as the "Recall" feature that acts as a photographic memory for the PC, logging user activities and allowing natural language searches.12
Live captions and AI enhancements are coming to Windows 11, along with ARM-optimized versions of popular apps like Adobe Photoshop and DaVinci Resolve Studio.1
The "Recall" feature acts as a photographic memory, logging user activities such as emails, websites, and documents. Users can search and retrieve this information using natural language queries, with the data stored locally for enhanced security.12
Microsoft claims these AI PCs are the fastest and most intelligent ever made, with all-day battery life. They are reported to be 58% faster than the M3 MacBook Air.3
Microsoft has partnered with major OEMs, including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung, to produce Copilot+PCs.12
The company also plans to offer AI PCs with Intel and AMD CPUs, starting with Intel's Lunar Lake and AMD's "Strix" Zen 5 mobile platform.1
These partnerships aim to bring the power of AI to a wide range of devices, catering to various consumer preferences and needs.
