Jonathan Drew Groff was born on March 26, 1985, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Julie, a physical education teacher, and Jim Groff, a harness horse trainer. Raised in a Mennonite community, Groff's early life was deeply influenced by his surroundings and family heritage. His father was Mennonite, and his paternal grandfather was a Mennonite minister, while his mother was Methodist, and Groff was raised in the Methodist faith. Growing up among Amish communities, he often drove his Amish neighbors, who could not use electricity or drive cars. Groff's passion for theater ignited at an early age after watching Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins. He and his brother frequently staged home productions, and Groff participated in numerous community theater productions during his adolescence. His early performances included roles in The Sound of Music, Ragtime, and Peter Pan at the Fulton Opera House. Groff graduated from Conestoga Valley High School in 2003 and initially planned to attend Carnegie Mellon University but deferred his admission to join a national tour of The Sound of Music
