What do platypus eat?

Platypuses are carnivorous mammals that feed on a variety of small aquatic animals. They are bottom feeders, using their bill to scoop up prey from the bottom of streams and rivers. Their diet mainly consists of12:
  • Insects and larvae
  • Shellfish
  • Worms
Platypuses store the food they catch, along with bits of gravel and mud, in their cheek pouches. Once they return to the surface, they mash and consume this mixture. Since platypuses lack teeth, the bits of gravel help them "chew" their meal12. These unique mammals are well-adapted to their semi-aquatic lifestyle and have evolved a specialized hunting strategy and digestive system to suit their dietary needs.
